Help is only a phone call away with Autism Connect, the national autism helpline. This time of year can be difficult and stressful for many families. This is due to changes in routines. It can also mean reduced supports due to clinic closures throughout December and January. However, one service that will be open throughout the holiday season is Autism Connect.
Autism Connect is a free, national autism helpline, providing independent and expert information over phone, email and webchat. It supports Autistic people, their families and carers, health professionals, researchers, teachers, employers and the broader community.
The friendly team offers expert advice in many areas, including:
- exploring autism and autistic identity
- assessment and diagnosis
- school and education
- the NDIS
- behaviour strategies
- referrals to services
- peer support connections
- finding autism-friendly places and events
The who and why.
The Autism connect is run by Amaze. Amaze was founded in 1967 by a group of parents struggling to find autism resources. Amaze has been a leading voice in autism for more than 50 years. Their role is to ensure the voices of Autistic people, and their families are heard, and their needs met.
Support over the festive season.
While the Autism Connect helpline is not a counselling service, it can provide support if you seek advice or a particular service for yourself or your family. It can also provide information about counselling services if needed. Hence, knowing that reliable information is available when needed is a great relief. The holiday season is also an excellent opportunity to learn more and get help with resources for the new year ahead.
It may also be helpful for newly diagnosed individuals who wish to learn more about autism and the support available. The Autism Connect helpline is accessible via email, telephone, or live online chat. The advisors also have access to resources that provide the latest information about autism in Australia and worldwide.
