Facing the past
This announcement comes two years after the release of her controversial directorial debut, “Music.” Music starred Maddie Ziegler as an Autistic woman. The film faced criticism for the inclusion of a neurotypical actress in the lead role of a nonverbal Autistic individual.
Sia ended up tweeting out an apology to the Autism community and added a “warning” to the beginning of the 2021 musical drama that read: “‘Music’ in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on Autistic people”
Sia’s recent Autism diagnosis announcement sheds light on her personal journey and may help raise awareness about Autism.
