We have changed our name! Kids on the Spectrum is now called Living on the Spectrum

Nominations are now open for funded retreats for mums.

We are excited to announce that MumEcations have opened nominations for funded retreats for mums.

As a parent we are often riddled with guilt. As a result we feel overwhelmed and stressed. It’s our job, right? Further more it can sometimes feels a little self indulgent. We feel that we should just be able to cope. Because of the guilt, the journey through motherhood is often challenging. Hence it can have an impact on mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

Need a funded retreat?

Alison started MumEcations, recognising that not all mums can just “take a break” As a result of this, she has decided to give mothers this amazing opportunity. We need to be reminded that we can’t be the best mother to our children if our cup is empty.

MuMEcations was launched in January 2019 and officially became a not-for-profit organisation in March 2021.  Alison aims to expand her charity to enable more funded retreats for Australian mums.

Alison says “We are on a mission to provide subsidised opportunities for Mums experiencing social, health or financial hardship to attend our retreats.  Our goal is to help Mums prioritise self-care to nurture and enhance their mental health and wellbeing.”

It is a tough Gig.

Being a parent to a child with special needs brings its own challenges, we tend to experience a higher level of stress. Infact, carers experience 40% higher levels of stress and anxiety than that of the general population. Because of this it can sometimes feel like we are fighting a never ending battle. Financially it can also be a struggle. And, if you do not have NDIS funding the stress can be all too much. A break can sometimes feels low on the priority list and even self indulgent. However it should be high on our priority.

Self care is not indulgent.

Firstly, Alison recognises that we should not feel guilty for prioritising self care. Secondly, we need to recognise that self care is vital, not only our own well being but also our children’s. We are over the moon to announce that Alison has opened up nominations and is offering the Kids on the Spectrum community places in the funded Geelong retreat in Feb 2022. It will be a chance to connect with other mums and carers and an opportunity for self care.
