Leaving school marks a significant transition period in life, regardless of whether or not one lives with a disability. Numerous challenges may be presented, with multiple factors for consideration. These may include further education, training, employment, moving out, relationships and more.
What is SLES?
Did you know that NDIS School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) funding is available to NDIS participants in their final years of school, and directly after leaving secondary school? These meaningful, individualised capacity building activities aim to help NDIS school leavers to prepare, look for and gain employment.
School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) is an individualised strategy negotiated between a participant and provider with the goal of building up a participant’s ability and confidence to enter the workforce. Each school leaver’s supports will be different, with a unique program aimed at developing a range of skills including money handling, time management, communication, discovery activities, work experience, job readiness, travel and personal development.
What SLES looks like
In managing a participant’s employment barriers, providers who deliver School Leaver Employment Supports can:
- Support a participant’s unique pathway to employment.
- Help foster partnerships and goodwill in their local community.
- Use their professional networks to engage and connect with employers.
The NDIS can fund school leaver employment supports for up to two years, depending on the participant’s circumstances. For further information, please refer to the NDIS School Leaver Employment Supports Booklet.
Other pathways to employment for school leavers
Some other pathways to employment for school leavers may include.
- Disability Employment Services (DES)
- supported employment through an Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE)
- Take up further education through a TAFE or university
- Volunteering.
